Following devolution, our brief was to create a series of
definitive stamps for England.
Our insight was to create a design that combined both modernity
and tradition through its execution. Subject matter needed to be
rich in tradition and heritage, to avoid controversy and to ensure
longevity. The designs were hand drawn in detail then sculpted as
bas relief before plaster cast moulds taken, which were polished
ready for photographing. Modern lighting techniques were used to
emphasise the form of the sculptures, which were then photographed
and finalized digitally.
The subject and technique led to speedy and widespread acceptance
of the English Definitives, which remain the default English
stamps.
